2013 NEWS UPDATES

ADDED 12/19/13:  We wish everyone a wonderful Christmas & Holiday Season!  As we get ready to ring in another year, we look forward to another exciting year filled with ZDK events and member accomplishments.  Thank you for supporting the ZDK.

Great News:  We just received our first WWP donation for 2014 Mark & Jeanne Mau of Cobleskill made a personal donation of $250.  That is a great start on our continuing effort on behalf of the WWP.  We would like to thank the Mau's for their wonderful generosity!

ADDED 11/17/13: The Master Class hosted by Sensei Tom Arcuri at Bailey's Karate in Herkimer, NY was full of enthusiastic participants from his dojo and other ZDK members.  Sensei Campos started the training with a class focused on drills to develop stance, posture, and core strength.  He followed that with drills to develop proper kicking technique and counter punching.  Sensei Paul Fracchia ended the day with training designed to develop proper technique and reaction time.  Other instructors in attendance included Sensei Larry Brooks - Brooks Karate School, Sensei Bob Pinney - Pinneys American Karate, Sensei Brian Cox - Cherry Valley ZDK, & Sensei Sam Anagnostopoulos - CNY-ZDK as well as members of their clubs.

WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT:  Veteran's Day marked the end of another year of raising funds for the WWP.  Our 2013 total was $5,441 and our total since 2007 is now $83,117.46Many thanks to the clubs and individuals who continue to support our effort.  With everyone's help we will be able to reach our ultimate goal of donating $100,000 to the WWP.  Thank you!

ADDED 10/28/13:  The trip this weekend to the Massena, NY ZDK club was hugely successful.  Friday Testing:  A surprise guest showed up for testing - Mr. Jeff Melander from Red Dragon Karate (ZDK Affiliate) in Ballston Spa, NY drove all the way up north to support the test and see his North country friends.  Congratulations to Bailey Campbell, a student of Mr. Secore's Malone, NY ZDK.  He did an excellent job and achieved Shodan rank.  At 17 and weighing only 113 lbs. he proved he had the skills in self-defense and sparring against bigger and very aggressive opponents.  David Josephs & George Morris from Forest Spirit Martial Arts achieved Nidan rank.  They train under Ms. Andrea Malik (ZDK Affiliate) in Potsdam, NY.  Both were impressive in their performances and left no doubt that they came prepared for the party!  It was great to see a large crowd of supporters on hand to observe and participate in testing.

Special Congratulations to Mr. Andre' Secore on being awarded the rank of Rokudan (6th dan) on Friday evening.  Mr. Campos received a petition and letter signed by several N-NY instructors requesting that Mr. Secore be considered for this honor.  They noted his unwavering commitment and dedication to the students in Malone, NY, as well as the other clubs in the region.  More importantly, everyone who comes in contact with Mr. Secore recognizes his ability as an instructor and his very obvious humility.  He personifies the saying that "actions speak louder than words.  This was a well deserved rank to a very loyal ZDK member.

Saturday featured a children's and adult seminar instructed by Sensei Campos.  The adult seminar had approximately 45 participants - many of them brown & black belt ranks.  Many thanks to all who helped to make the weekend such a success.  It was great to touch bases with all the students and club instructors in the North country!

ADDED 10/21/13:   The 21st Diamond Valley Classic Tournament directed by Mr. Tom Arcuri was another success.  Mr. Brooks & Ms. Gillen were on hand to help organize the day.  Many ZDK instructors were on hand including, Mr. & Mrs. Streeter, Mr. Cox, Mr. Tomlinson, Mr. Pinney, Mr. Stevenson, Mr. Melander, Mr. Rodman,, & Mr. Suggs.  This event, like all the events run by ZDK members, is fun and friendly.  It is always great to have an opportunity to spend a little time reconnecting with everyone.  Congratulations to all who came to assist and compete.

ADDED 10/15/13:  The 9/14/13 Brown/Black Belt class instructed by Sensei Campos for ZDK System members went very well.  It was good to see participants from ZDK clubs in Oneida, Saratoga, Canton, Cherry Valley, Syracuse, Sherburne, and Johnstown in attendance.  The day was productive and everyone worked hard.  Thank you for attending.

Sensei Campos was in Houston, TX from 10/3-10/6/13 visiting Mr. Gifford and the TX ZDK.  He presented seminars on Thur. 10/3 and on Sat 10/5.  Both events had over 40 participants in attendance (see photo below of TX seminar group).  On Fri. 10/4 he attended testing.  Congratulations to new Shodans:  Andy Pollock, Colin Scott, & Wayde Wong; and Nidan Rick Russek.  On Sat. evening he attended a great 50th Birthday party at Fernando's restaurant for Bill Hickl.  It was great to see so many of the TX ZDK members at these events, as well as, Ms. Susan Jackson who flew in from Florida to join in the celebration and training.  It is always nice to see Bob & June Gifford and all the TX members on these visits.  Mr. Gifford has been a student of Sensei Campos for 44 years.  Hard to believe it has been that long!!!

ADDED 9/12/13 Congratulations to Lisa Guccione on completion of her first ever triathlon.  She swam 600 meters, biked 17 miles, and ran 5k.  She came in 80th in a field of 200.  Not bad for her first event at the ripe age of - no, we won't go there!  Fantastic!

Just a reminder that Mr. Fracchia & Mr. Campos will be instructing at Bailey's in Herkimer on Nov. 9.  This event will count as a Brn/Blk belt class for ZDK system members.  See the Calendar Page for registration information.

ADDED 8/20/13 There is lots of news since our last update.  First, Sensei Campos was one of three Keynote Speaker's at Adam Grogin's NE Open Gala on Fri. evening 8/16.  Other speaker's included Hanshi Paul Fracchia, who Sensei has known since the 70's and Grandmaster Craig MacDonald.  After being introduced by Jeff Melander - thanks Jeff for the wonderful intro - Sensei Campos spoke about beginning training in 1959 and what it was like in the "old" days and shared a few stories about visiting dojo's and the early tournaments in the Capital (NY) region.  It was a fun evening that was part 1 of a phenomenally successful weekend.  On Sat. he attended the NE Open Tournament where he ran into instructor's he had not seen in years including, Glenn Kinnie & Gerald McGinnis, who had trained at John Izzo's Okinawan Karate studio in Schenectady.  He also reconnected with Ann Ralbovsky-Bruno, a student who trained with him in Johnstown 25 years ago.  ZDK member instructors in attendance included, Vicki Gillen, Larry Brooks, Jeff Melander, & Josh Premo (assistant instructor at the Massena, NY ZDK).

THE TOURNAMENT:  It is obvious that Adam Grogin puts his heart & soul into this event.  His effort shows in the enthusiasm and support that he has received from the martial arts community.  He has a great team that work hard to make the day a success and a good experience for the competitors and spectators.  Simply said, there has never been an event like it in the Capital region.

SOME RESULTS WE JUST RECEIVEDJeff Melander beat Larry Brooks 4-2 in Sparring for 1st & 2nd Place in the Seniors.  Jeff also took 1st Place (big surprise!) in Form & Weapons.  The fact that Larry Brooks is still out there mixing it up with people 20 years his junior is phenomenal - kudos to him.  The three competitors from the Massena ZDK had a hugely successful day.  Josh Premo - 1st Place Weapons & 3rd in Forms, Samantha Conn - 1st Place in Forms, Weapons, & Sparring, plus a 3rd Place in Extreme Weapons, Dan Elman - 1st Place Sparring.

PICTURE (L-R):  MEMBERS OF THE MASSENA, NY ZDK AT THE NE OPEN:  DAN ELMAN, SAMANTHA CONN, JOSH PREMO WITH SENSEI CAMPOS.

ALSO:  We had a visit to HQ by Mr. Ron Brown - Director of the N-NY ZDK, Mr. Vince Perry, & Mr. Josh Premo yesterday (8/19).  They were down to assist Mr. Perry in preparing for his future Godan test.  After a morning review we all gathered at Mr. Campos' house for lunch before heading back to the north country.

ADDED 8/13/13:  We had a visit from two of our early black belt members yesterday - Craig & Gary Corato were in town from Dallas & Phoenix to see family and attend a reunion.  Craig began training in 1970 while in HS and Gary started in 1973.  This was while Sensei Campos was teaching at FMCC.  Craig attended SUNY Cobleskill (NY) where he established the very first ZDK satellite club.  After he left Cobleskill, Gary took over instructional duties.  Craig was also the very first competitor in the region to be rated by Karate Illustrated Magazine.  It was great to reconnect with them and share some great stories from the early days of the ZDK.

ADDED 7/26/13It is almost August - wow, where did the summer go? A good part of June was spent in CA. visiting Lake Tahoe, Yosemite NP, & Sequoia NP.  Mr. Campos also had the opportunity to visit the Escobar Training Grounds Martial Arts club in S. Lake Tahoe while he was there.  He had a chance to watch part of a black belt test and was amazed by the similarities to the ZDK testing protocol.  Thanks to Cory and his father Joey Escobar for their hospitality.  This is a "real deal" organization with some tough standards and students.

In early July Mr. Campos instructed at the Johnstown ZDK while Mr. & Mrs. Streeter were on vacation.  It was great to work with the students.  Everyone worked hard and impressed him with their effort.

On the weekend of July 19, Mr. Campos attended the 31st Super Summer Seminars in Herkimer.  It was great to visit with everyone - especially Mr. Gifford Mr. Ryan, & Mr. Hickl from TX, as well as the organizer of the Cobb Olympics. Ms. Jackson from FL.  On Fri. we held a testing for Ethan Waterman and are pleased to report he achieved Shodan rank.  Kudos to Mr. Pinney and everyone who assisted for taking on the task of preparing him for the test.  Nice job!

Mr. Arcuri and his staff did a great job organizing the camp in spite of having his dojo flooded 2 weeks before the camp.  The ZDK System seminar was a success and Mr. Campos would like to thank Josh Premo & Jovan Germano for doing an excellent job of teaching Kanshu Sandan.

ZDK SYSTEM SEMINAR AT SSS 2013 - SOMEONE GOT CUT FROM PIX?

ADDED 6/4/13The following tribute was submitted by Ms. Susan Jackson from the Traditional Martial Arts Center in Orlando, FL honoring the passing of Master Blackburn:

The Traditional Martial Arts family held two events this past weekend with attendance of many students and friends from Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. The first was a sunrise service at Daytona Beach with Tai Chi then his favorite form, Bassai, performed by over 25 instructors and students. A the last Kiai, his ashes were spread in the water. The next was a celebration of his life as leader of the Spiritual Martial Arts Association at TMAC in Orlando. A chime and Gong meditation followed by drumming by over 40 people while different styles were demonstrated in random order was one of the most powerful martial arts experiences I have witnessed.

Grand Master Blackburn had been in the martial arts for 50 years and has influenced thousands of individuals during his life. He started in Korea while in the military with Jae Chul Shin and Hwang Kee, the founder of Tang Soo Do. He opened the Blackburn Learning Center in Cummings Georgia in 1986 and lead a Brotherhood March that gained national attention because of the racism in Forsyth County. Because of the death treats he received he relocated to Pensacola then Orlando where he opened another Blackburn Center, which is now TMAC.

He leaves a legacy of spiritual teachings, martial skills through hard work, friendship, and love. We are all saddened at his passing, but happy to have known such a unique and wonderful person who touched our lives in so many ways.
Tang Soo!

Susan Jackson
Chief Instructor, TMAC
