2012 NEWS UPDATES

ADDED 12/14/12:  As we get ready to close out another successful year, I want to thank every instructor and member for your support and commitment to the ZDK.  I hope that each of you has a fantastic Christmas & New Year celebration.  2013 is shaping up to be another exciting year filled with camaraderie, commitment, and training.  Happy Holiday's!!

ADDED 11/7/12:  Mr. Campos, Mr. Pinney, Mr. Tomlinson, Mr. Rinaldo, & Mr. Greco attended the testing held on Sat. Nov. 3 held at Waterman's Martial Arts in Oneida, NY.  We would like to thank Sensei Heath Waterman for his hospitality and congratulate the students who were successful on their new ranks.

ADDED 10/29/12:  Mr. Campos had the honor of going up to visit and instruct the students and instructors in N-NY on 10/26-10/28.  He has been making that trip twice a year for over 30 years and it is always a great time.  Fri night Mr. Campos had an opportunity to see Sam Anagnostopoulos test for his sandan rank and Sam did a great job.  Sam instructs in Syracuse, NY but travels regularly to Canton, NY to train with Mr. Dave Guccione.  Everyone in attendance got to see how important dedication and commitment is to success in the martial arts and in life.  On Sat. morning Mr. Campos instructed a children's and adult seminar in Mr. Perry & Mr. Pepe's dojo in Massena, NY.  The usual group of N-NY club instructors were on hand - Mr. Brown, Mr. & Mrs. Guccione, Ms. Malik, Mr. Perry, Mr. Secore - as well as almost 50 black, brown, and under students.  As always, Mr. Campos is appreciative of the N-NY ZDK group for their support and especially to Mr. Brown & Mr. Perry for organizing his visit.  It was great to see everyone!

ADDED 10/23/12 Congratulations to Mr. Arcuri on another hugely successful Diamond Valley Karate Tournament on Sat. Oct. 20. The event held at Herkimer County Community College in Herkimer, NY drew a very large group of competitors from all over NYS. As always it was efficiently run by Ms. Gillen, Mr. Brooks and all of the black belts who helped judge. We can't forget all the other volunteers who helped keep score and made the day run smoothly. In addition to the large group of Bailey's Black Belts, there were a number of ZDK System instructors in attendance as well (Mr. Cox, Mr. Tomlinson, Mr. Greco, Mr. & Mrs. Streeter, Mr. Stevenson, etc.). It was great to see Mr. Suggs in attendance with an invited group from NYC under the direction of Master Dave Thomson (Goju). This was his second year at the event and he brought a superb group of martial artists with him. Highlights of the day included Mr. Melander's phenomenal kata performance - Grand Champion again!  It was a great day of competition.

ADDED 7/23/12:   We are sure everyone is in recovery after celebrating at the 30th Super Summer Seminars Martial Arts Camp at Herkimer County Community College.  It is hard to comprehend that it has been three decades since that first camp in 1983 in Lake Placid, NY.  We still remember our first guest, Master Hidy Ochiai, driving up with his two young sons and, when we went to help with his luggage, he had all of his stuff in a couple of cardboard boxes!!

As always, this years camp started with testing on Friday morning.  A large number of ZDK senior ranks were on hand to assist as board members, ukes, etc.  We were also honored that one of the "special guests" at the camp, Kyoshi Alain Sailly from France, and our long-time friend Matt Dorsey from Rochester, NY, asked if they could observe our test.  They were both impressed and supportive of the test process.  Better yet, the three candidates performed at an extremely high level of technical & physical proficiency and were all passed unanimously by the boards that graded their performance.  That says a lot about the instructors & club members who helped them reach their goal.  CONGRATULATIONS TO:  HUNTER COX from the Cherry Valley, NY ZDK on achieving his Shodan rank;  DOSE CHURBOCK from Safety America in Sugar Land, TX on his Yodan;  and JOVAN GERMANO from the Canton, NY ZDK on his excellent Godan test.

Saturday and Sunday were filled with seminars and training and Mr. Tom Arcuri, who now directs SSS, did a fantastic job of lining up a great group of instructors from diverse styles and backgrounds.  The two "special guests" were GEORGE MATTSON, 10TH DAN UECHI-RYU, the pioneer who brought Uechi-Ryu to the USA in 1958; and ALAIN SAILLY, 8TH DAN, who was a world champion competitor in Jujitsu and travels all over the world to instruct.  After the WWP raffle (which raised over $1,200), the demonstrations, and instructor awards,  the "Cobb Olympics" were a highlight of the Sat. night festivities and are always run very successfully by Ms. Susan Jackson from Orlando, FL.  There was a lot of competition but the winners this year were Sam Anagnostopolis & Ron Brown representing Greece!

Super Summers is the one venue where ZDK members come together annually to re-connect and solidify the bonds that make us a strong, vibrant, and progressive organization.  It is also a vehicle for connecting with so many other, non-ZDK, members and instructors of the martial arts community.  We heard that camps like SSS are a dying breed.  That many martial arts groups are moving more towards being insular & closed.  While we are sure that there are elements in the M.A. community that think that way, we do not believe that an open progressive and continuously evolving camp that focuses on our commonalities as martial artists cannot be successful - especially one that provides your room, meals, entertainment, and 20 FANTASTIC INSTRUCTORS for $215!  It is always sad to see the weekend come to an end, but we know we will see you all again in 2013!!!  THANK YOU TOM FOR KEEPING THE VISION ALIVE...

ADDED 6/20/12:   On Sat., June 9, Mr. Campos & Mr. Tomlinson travelled to Sherburne, NY to participate in the 20th year celebration and opening of the new location of Pinney's American Karate.  In addition to the 20th Anniversary celebration, there was also testing for several students.  It was great to see Mr. Pinney and his black belt members including Mr. Waterman from his club, Waterman's Martial Arts  in Oneida, NY.  Mr. Pinney has worked hard for months getting his building ready for this event and his hard work shows.  Congratulations!!!

TEST BOARD AT PINNEY'S AMERICAN KARATE (BACK ROW L-R):  Mr. Bob Pinney, Mr. Gennady Julien, Mr. Campos, Mr. Tomlinson, & Mr. Heath Waterman.  KNEELING (L-R):  Mr. Taro Hudson, Mr. Rick Rinaldo, & Mr. Steve Youngs.

MASTER CLASS:  On Sat., June 16, Mr. Tom Arcuri hosted a Master Class at his club in Herkimer, NY.  Mr. Paul Fracchia, a 7th Dan in Seito-Shito Ryu from Glens Falls, NY  & Mr. Campos, ZDK Director, were the featured instructors.  Mr. Fracchia has 48 years of training & Mr. Campos has been involved in the martial arts since 1959.  Mr. Fracchia instructed throws, takedowns, and sweeps and Mr. Campos followed up with a drill for takedowns, as well as, drills for striking and punching.  The day was a huge success with most of the participants made up of black belts.  Participants came from the N-NY ZDK (Massena & Malone) , Pinney's American Karate (Sherburne & Hamilton, NY), Brooks Karate (W. Winfield, NY), Red Dragon Karate (Ballston Spa, NY), and Mr. Arcuri's Bailey's Karate Club (Herkimer, NY).  The only complaint was there was not enough time to teach more material.  Many thanks to Mr. Arcuri for putting the program together.

ADDED 5/23/12:  Sensei Campos had a very busy visit to the N-NY ZDK this past weekend.  On Fri 5/18 he was at the Canton ZDK club directed by Mr. Dave Guccione to pre-test black belt candidates.  Mr. Brown, N-NY Coordinator, and Mr. Perry, Massena ZDK club instructor, were also in attendance to assist with the pre-test.  After a very productive afternoon Mr. Brown & Mr. Campos travelled to Malone, NY for dinner.  Saturday was busy with three seminars for ZDK members.  A very well attended children's seminar, a capacity crowd of approx. fifty participants in the adult seminar, and a special black belt only seminar at the end of the day.  For over thirty years the N-NY group has hosted Sensei Campos on a bi-annual basis and this was one of the best attended ever.  The weekend was topped off with an excellent dinner at a local restaurant.  Mr. Campos is grateful for the opportunity to visit and instruct this very dedicated N-NY group.  It was great to have see all of the club instructors; Mr. Brown, Mr. & Mrs. Guccione, Ms. Langdon, Ms. Malik, Mr. Pepe. Mr. Perry, & Mr. Secore, as well as, all the other black belts and students who participated in the training.  Mr. Campos is looking forward to seeing everyone from N-NY at the 2012 Super Summer Seminars 30th Annual Camp

ADDED 5/5/12:  Sensei Campos had a great time instructing the members of Ms. Susan Jackson's Traditional Martial Arts club in Orlando, FL on 4/20 & 4/21.  The students were enthusiastic and energetic.  He was kept busy this year with two sessions of women's self-defense, a private session with some of the TMA black belts, as well as a session consisting of adults and children.  It was great to reconnect with the TMA group and to enjoy the hospitality and warm FL sunshine!

ADDED 4/5/12:   MS. VICKI GILLEN held her annual Copper City Championships at Holland patent HS on Sat. Mar. 31 and it was a huge success.  The event ran smoothly thanks to the efforts of Larry & Laura Brooks, Tom Arcuri and many other black belts and senior ranks.  There were several new clubs in attendance and the comments from those instructors were extremely positive.  They liked the format and efficiency of the day but, more importantly, their students were treated fairly and had a good time.  Congratulations to Ms. Gillen on another quality event!

ADDED 3/25/12:  CONGRATULATIONS TO MR. RICK RINALDO from Mr. Bob Pinney's PAK clubs in Hamilton & Sherburne, NY on his successful test for Nidan yesterday in Johnstown, NY.  Rick trained hard for the test and was passed unanimously by the Board.  Thanks also to the senior Board members who travelled to assist on his exam:  Ms. Arlene Brown (Johnstown, NY), Mr. Brian Cox (Cherry Valley, NY), Mr. Tom Greco (Ft. Plain, NY), Mr. Jeff Melander (Ballston Spa, NY), Mr. & Mrs. Robert Streeter (Johnstown, NY), Mr. Harry Tomlinson (Sharon Springs, NY).  Thanks also to the assistants on the test:  Mr. Heath Waterman (Oneida, NY), Steve Youngs, and Ron DeMello from the PAK.

After the test everyone went over to Mr. Campos' house for a little celebratory BBQ since the weather has been unusually warm here in the great NE.  While it wasn't as warm and sunny as the past week, we were all able to relax and spend a little social time together.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MR. ROBERT STREETER, Chief Instructor at the Johnstown ZDK, who has added a new fiction book to his list of accomplishments. If you are into scary stories then you will want to get a copy of "BLOODTHIEF." It is available through Amazon in book form and for the Kindle reader at this link: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=robert+w.+streeter

ADDED 3/19/12 The EDS seminar held in Herkimer, NY on 3/10/12 was another successful day of training.  Mr. Arcuri & Mr. Moore spent the day working on Multiple Assailant scenarios.  There were participants from as far as the Bronx, as well as representatives from law-enforcement, security, and the martial arts.  The next EDS will be in Nov. and will be posted on the ZDK Calendar page when details have been finalized.

Mr. Pinney's 16th Annual Colgate University Invitational Tournament held on 3/18/12 was well attended considering the 75 degree weather we have been experiencing.  The day went smoothly thanks to the efforts of all of the black belts in attendance.  Mr. Arcuri & Mr. Brooks helped to expedite the divisions and move the event along.  We cannot help but notice that, while a lot of the black belts who judge at tournaments are either Chief Instructors, or competitors, there are also several who are neither.  Rather they are people like Mr. Tomlinson, Mr. Greco, and others, who come to judge because they feel a responsibility as senior ZDK ranks to offer their assistance to fellow members.  These are the same people who can always be counted on to attend ZDK black belt pre-tests and testing even though they do not have a club or students.  They are the heart and soul of any organization.  They offer their help unconditionally without any need for special recognition.  This is to say THANK YOU to those people.

ADDED 2/6/12:   CONGRATULATIONS TO LARRY & LAURA BROOKS on a very successful 19th Annual Friendship Invitational Tournament yesterday in W. Winfield, NY.  They had great weather and a large number of participants at their event.  Many senior ZDK instructors were on hand to assist and the day was over by 3:30 pm so everyone got to head off to see the very exciting Super Bowl.  We would like to congratulate and thank all of the competitors, scorekeepers, and judges who helped make the day run so efficiently.  Continued success to the Brooks in 2012.
