2011 NEWS UPDATES

ADDED 12/6/11:   Mr. Campos, Mr. Tomlinson, & Mr. Greco attended testing at Pinney's American Karate, in Sherburne, NY on 12/5.  Congratulations to all the test candidates on a job well-done.  Special congratulations to JON FOX on successfully testing for his Shodan rank after nine years of training.  We would like to thank Mr. Pinney for the invitation to participate and appreciated his hospitality.  Continued success!

Congratulations to Mr. Dave Guccione, instructor of the Canton, NY-ZDK on his 70th birthday.  There is a rumor that there was a coffin present at the recent celebration and just hope they didn't need it for anything but effect.  How does that work?  Does someone say, "Hey, I've got a coffin lying around that I'll bring to the party.  That will really liven things up!"  It would seem to carry the idea of "being prepared" to a new level.  Was it a gift?  If so, we hope Mr. Guccione took advantage of the opportunity to use it to get a good night's rest!

ADDED 11/20/11:  Congratulations to Sensei Jeff Melander, Chief Instructor of Red Dragon Karate in Ballston Spa, NY on the celebration of his 30th year in the martial arts.  Mr. Campos had the honor of attending the Red Dragon anniversary banquet on Fri. 11/18 and presented him with a certificate marking the occasion.  Jeff started his training at 9 years old under the direction of Tony & Shawn Irvin.  They were out of state and unable to attend the banquet but were there in spirit.  Jeff's wife Jane, his mother Linda, and the Red Dragon students and instructors were there to help him celebrate his training and teaching milestone.  Jeff is a phenomenally talented martial artist and excellent teacher who has the respect of everyone in his club and the ZDK.

On Sat. 11/19 Mr. Campos presented an adult seminar at the Red Dragon school as part of Mr. Melander's weekend of events.  In addition to Red Dragon black belts and students, there was a group of N-NY ZDK students who came with Sensei Andre' Secore, students from the Cherry Valley, NY ZDK along with Blaze Cox, and Sensei John Pezzino from the Greene Dragon club in Greene, NY.  Many thanks to all of the participants who drove such long distances to help Mr. Melander celebrate and participate in the training.  Sensei Campos instructed a 3.5 hour class covering the material from his ZDK curriculum class at Super Summers last July.  At the end of the day everyone left with new material and training drills.  Here's to another 30 years!

ADDED 11/13/11:   The EDS Seminar held at Mr. Arcuri's club in Herkimer, NY yesterday was another success.  Mr. Arcuri instructed the first half of the day followed by Charlie Moore in the afternoon.  The group in attendance included martial artists, and law-enforcement officers and included several people new to the program.  The program delved into working on skills from stand-up to ground and everyone got an intensive workout.  The day ended with several people testing their abilities against opponents suited up in safety gear.  Thanks to Tom & Charlie, the day was very productive.  Tentatively the next EDS seminar will be in March of 2012.

ADDED 11/11/11On this VETERAN'S DAY we are pleased to report that our Wounded Warrior Project effort for 2011 has resulted in approximately $10,000 in donations from participating clubs.  Many of you may have noted that, as Veteran's Day approached, the WWP was prominently mentioned on TV & print.  This past Sunday Parade Magazine had a big spread on the WWP and we also saw an ad on Fox news this week.  We will list the participating clubs & amounts as soon as we receive the donations that are on the way.  In a time of real economic hardship, the effort of participating clubs and individuals on behalf of the WWP is greatly appreciated.  Thank you for not forgetting the tremendous physical sacrifice made by so many brave men & women on our behalf.  Go to:  www.believeinheroes.org to receive coupons off products from companies that support the WWPOur 2012 effort begins immediately!

ADDED 11/7/11:  Congratulations to Mr. Arcuri on a hugely successful Diamond Valley Karate Tournament on Sat. Nov. 5.  The event held at Herkimer County Community College in Herkimer, NY drew a very large group of competitors from all over NYS.  As always it was efficiently run by Ms. Gillen, Mr. Brooks and all of the black belts who helped judge.  We can't forget all the other volunteers who helped keep score and made the day run smoothly.  In addition to the large group of Bailey's Black Belts, there were a number of ZDK System instructors in attendance as well (Mr. Cox, Mr. Tomlinson, Mr. Greco, Mr. Streeter, etc.).  It was great to see Mr. Suggs in attendance with an invited group from NYC under the direction of Master Dave Thomson (Goju).  His students were extremely competitive and he noted that they were very happy with the fairness and sportsmanship at the event.  Highlights of the day included Mr. Melander's phenomenal kata performance - Grand Champion again!  The amazing sparring match between Blaze Cox (Cherry Valley ZDK) & John Pezzino (Greene Dragon MA) was enjoyed by everyone.  They personified technical excellence and high energy.  As for being ring-wise and bringing it at age 50, Master Thomson had a couple of great fights on his way to the Grand Championship in Sparring.  It was a great day of competition.

ADDED 10/26/11:  Mr. Campos, Mr. Greco, & Mr. Tomlinson travelled to Colgate University on Tues. 10/25 to present a 90 minute training session on self-defense.  The 10 week program is organized and coordinated by Mr. Bob Pinney, the director of Pinney's American Karate.  We had a great time instructing and visiting with the participants and Mr. Pinney, Mr. Rinaldo and the students.

We would like to thank Mr. Pinney for the check of $716 that Pinney's American Karate raised by holding a kick-a-thon to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.  Our 2011 WWP total is now at $5,184.00 and our grand total since 2007 is $66,306.46.  Everyone has until Veteran's Day to complete a fund-raising effort for 2011.  Thank you to those clubs, students, and individuals who have generously donated to this effort!

ADDED 10/24/11:  A reunion took place on Sat. 10/22 with some of the ZDK's first generation black belts that we have not seen since the 30th ZDK Banquet in 2004.  It was great to have the opportunity to spend a little time with Steve Holden & Vinnie Rizzio who achieved their Shodan's in 1977 and Tom Greco & Ed Taglialatela who achieved Shodan in 1979.  Steve is now in New Mexico doing personal training & instructing martial arts, Vinnie is working at Univ. of Vermont, Ed is a detective with the Syracuse, NY PD, Tom is retired and living in Ft. Plain, NY.  He works out weekly in Tabata class with Mr. Campos.  Everyone ended up at the Campos residence where stories were swapped about the "old" days.  They have always remembered how "kind, patient, and soft-spoken" Mr. Campos was as an instructor...they all especially enjoyed the shinai that Sensei often used as a motivational tool!  Except for Tom, who was out of the Marines and was a Vietnam Vet, the rest were teenagers when they began their martial arts training and they helped to put the ZDK on the map through their competitive successes.   MIA Rick Bowne, who apparently was not allowed to come out and play but was spoken of fondly (meaning he was ripped apart) by all in attendance.  It was a fun evening and brought back many memories of those early days at the ZDK!

ADDED 10/20/11:  Congratulations to Don DeWitt on his new website.  Don is a ZDK member and has authored books on martial arts and his Marine Corp experience.  Check his new website out at:  http://sites.google.com/site/ddewittbooks/   We wish him continued success.

ADDED 10/18/11:  WOUNDED WARRIOR DONATIONWe would like to thank the Malone, NY ZDK instructors Andre' Secore & Cheri Langdon for recently hosting a tournament that raised $685 for the Wounded Warrior Project.  This was a phenomenal effort and we will forward their donation immediately.  Thank you & congratulations to all the instructors and students who helped make the event such a success!

CONGRATULATIONS TO DAVE CASTALDO on completing his first full Marathon race in Syracuse, NY on Sat. Oct. 15.  Dave ran the 26 miles in 4 hrs 48 min.  Dave trains under Mr. Guccione at the Canton, NY ZDK.  The only bad thing was he had to miss the N-NY Testing & Training held that same day in Massena but at least he was not at home sitting on the couch!

ADDED 10/17/11What a phenomenal weekend we had in N-NY!  TESTING:  On Fri. 10/14 we had Black Belt testing attended by a huge number of N-NY ZDK black belts who acted as board members and ukes.  We are extremely pleased to say that all seven candidates from the Malone, Massena, & Potsdam, NY clubs were successful.  CONGRATULATIONS TO NEW SHODAN'S:  BRENNEN SECORE, MAGGIE ALBU, & BERT CAMPBELL from the Malone, NY ZDK club run by Andre' Secore;  JOHN SHIRLEY from the Massena, NY ZDK club run by Dave Pepe & Vince Perry;  DAVID JOSEPHS & GEORGE MORRIS from Forest Spirit Martial Arts club in Potsdam, NY run by Andrea Malik;  and new SANDAN ERNESTO PEREZ of Mr. Secore's Malone club.  All the candidates did a great job in front of a very large group of spectators.

SEMINARS:  On Sat. 10/15 Sensei Campos presented a children's seminar followed by an adult seminar.  It was great to see such a large crowd of participants made up of all ranks from the clubs in Canton, Malone, Massena, & Potsdam.  There was a lot of sweat left on the floor by the end of training.  At the end of the day, Mr. Campos had the honor of awarding MR. RON BROWN his 7th DAN PROMOTION CERTIFICATE.  Mr. Brown was last promoted in 2004 and the senior ranks in N-NY petitioned for his promotion based on his selfless dedication to the growth of the N-NY ZDK clubs.  While Mr. Brown has had to contend with several health issues in the last couple of years, he has never failed to offer support, advice, motivation, and direction to the students and instructor's under his direction.  His efforts and loyalty have earned him the respect and admiration of his peers in the North country.  Jerry Benware sent Mr. Brown this quote that sums up how the N-NY folks feel about him:  "A great football coach isn't on the field suited up banging heads with the team, he is in the locker room, on the sidelines coaching and shaping a winning team."   CONGRATULATIONS RON!

Quimby, B. Campbell, D. Guccione, S. Anagnostopoulos, A. Malik, J. Germano, C. Langdon, H. Huczel, B. Kenna, E. Perez,   D. Josephs, G. Morris, B. Campbell, D. Nadeau, T. Sokol

PICTURE 2:  SAT. SEMINAR PARTICIPANT GROUP

Mr. Perry was instrumental in organizing a celebratory dinner honoring Mr. Brown on Sat. night.  Several people, including Mr. Secore, offered stories and some humorous anecdotes from the past.  More importantly, Ron took the time to recognize and thank everyone for their effort on his behalf over the last three plus decades, especially his wife Phyllis and daughter Cheri, who also are ZDK black belts.  Mr. Campos is proud to call Ron a ZDK member and friend!

ADDED 10/6/11:   CONGRATULATIONS TO ROLAND LAVIGNE on the opening of his Eight Star Martial Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY.  Roland achieved black belt rank under Mr. Melander and has also trained extensively in Chinese Kung Fu and other arts.  We have watched as he has developed into a great martial artist and we wish him great success.  His website link can be found on our Favorite Links page, and his contact info is on our Affiliates page.  We look forward to working with Roland in the years ahead.

Mr. Pinney just notified us that he will be hosting a Kick-A-Thon for the Wounded Warrior Project on Oct. 15 at his club in Sherburne, NY.  We want to thank him and his members of Pinney's American Karate for being a part of our 2011 effort on behalf of the WWP.  We look forward to hearing the event was a great success.  As an aside, a recent survey indicates that only 25% of the public pays any attention to the decade old wars we have been fighting.  It seems like the 1% of the population who continue to sacrifice for the remaining 99% are forgotten by 75% of us.

ADDED 9/20/11:   Congratulations to Mr. Streeter on his promotion to 6th Dan (Rokudan) on Sat. 9/17/11.  Mr. Campos awarded him his new rank at the Johnstown studio in front of many students and parents.  Mr. Streeter was promoted to 5th Dan in July of 2000 and, while having more than enough time in grade, never expressed a desire to be elevated in rank.  He has always demonstrated the humility and dedication commensurate with high rank and has been a committed and loyal member of the ZDK.  His commitment to the growth of the students and to the continuation of the club that Mr. Campos established in Johnstown, NY is obvious to all who know him.  He has continued to attend ZDK member sponsored tournaments as a judge and competitor, work to develop and promote new ZDK black belts and build the Johnstown club, help his community, and continues to develop himself as a martial artist and instructor.  He sets an example of hard work, dedication, and loyalty to the ZDK that is exemplary.  Along with Mrs. Streeter, they keep the Johnstown dojo strong and active.  We wish him continued success in his martial arts journey!

ADDED 9/12/11We hope everyone has had a good summer and that you are gearing up for a busy Fall.  We have several events coming up for all members and encourage everyone to participate in the seminars and tournaments sponsored by our members.  Be sure to check out the ZDK Calendar page regularly.

MR. GIFFORD:  We just received news that Mr. Bob Gifford, our most senior ZDK System instructor in Houston, TX, was recently hospitalized now is now back home.  Apparently his ice hockey career has been put on hold for at least six months.  Mr. Gifford was not enamored with the food at the hospital and was grateful they had a McDonald's in the cafeteria.  We wish him a speedy and complete recovery and look forward to seeing him at SSS 2012.

ADDED 8/25/11On Sunday August 14, 2011 members of the CNYZDK and their friends participated in a race called, The Warrior Dash. The race was held at Windham NY and had over 7000 thousand participants. All proceeds of the event went to the Wounded Warrior Project. Those who participated are Bill Milewski, Dave Castaldo (ZDK), Ron Waldron (ZDK), Ken LeBlond, and Sam Anagnostopoulos (Sensei of CNYZDK).  Unfortunately, we do not know how much they raised but congratulate them on their participation.

ADDED 7/20/11:   Super Summer Weekend Testing 7/15/11:  Congratulations to Taro Hudson (PAK) on achieving Shodan;  Steve Youngs (PAK) on Nidan; Carol Vaughn (RDMA), along with Jory Denny & Zack Pollock (S.A. - TX) on being promoted to Sandan.  We want to thank the Board Members, Uke's, and everyone involved in helping the candidates have a successful day.  Many thanks to Mr. Arcuri for the use of his brand new facility in Herkimer, NY for testing.

SSS was another success thanks to the hard work of Mr. Arcuri and his staff.  It was great to see so many old friends and to have the opportunity to meet new people at camp.  The weather was perfect the entire weekend with warm days and cool nights and a lot of hot training.  Scott Sonnon, this year's "special" guest instructor was amazing and added a new dimension to the training regimen of the participants who took his class.  The demos on Sat. evening were great and, as always, it was hard to say goodbye on Sun.

2012 will be the 30th Annual SSS Camp and Mr. Arcuri hopes to have some great surprises for the attendees.  We hope to see you all there to help celebrate this amazing milestone.  There are very few, if any, open camps nationally that can claim to have a 30 year history of bringing such a diverse group of martial artists together for a weekend of sharing and fun.  Thanks for keeping the vision alive Tom!

ADDED 6/26/11:  Mr. Campos would like to thank those instructors and students who contacted him via mail, email, & by phone to express condolences on the passing of his mother.

PROFESSOR WALLY JAY HAS PASSED:  If you never had the opportunity to train under Wally Jay at one of his seminars or when he was a presenter at SSS, you missed being exposed to a true martial artist.  Grandmaster Jay was one of three members of Black Belt Magazine's Hall of Fame to sign Mr. Campos' 9th Dan certificate (Tadashi Yamashita & Gary Alexander were the other two).  You can see more about him and leave a message of condolence at:  http://martialinfo.com/in-memory-of/wally-jay/

June has been a crazy month and we are now gearing up for the 29th Super Summer Seminars on 7/15-7/17 (see Calendar Page).  We are looking forward to seeing many of you at camp.  Our schedule remains the same:  Fri. morning is testing and lots of great training on Sat. & Sun.

On May 16, Mr. Campos, Mr. Greco, & Mr. Tomlinson were presenters at the Sister to Sister conference at Fulton-Montgomery Community College in Johnstown, NY.  This is an annual event for Middle School girls organized by the American Association of University Women.  We have been asked to present since the program was established 11 years ago.  As always, the classes were fun and the students were very receptive to our presentation.

On June 22, Ms. Brown, Mr. Santangelo, and other members of the Johnstown ZDK presented sessions on personal protection and stranger danger at the Pleasant Ave Elementary school in Johnstown.  This was one of many Wellness Day programs that we have participated in for over 40 years.  We are proud of the community service we have provided since the 1970's.

ADDED 5/8/11Unfortunately Mr. Campos was unable to attend Ms. Vicki Gillen's Copper City Championships held in Rome, NY on 4/23 because he was out of town for Easter weekend.  Mr. Streeter from HQ attended and reported that it was well attended and everyone enjoyed the day.  We heard that Mr. Larry Brooks had a great day of sparring competition (for an old guy!!) at this event and also at Mr. Cornwell's Binghamton event.  Congratulations to Larry & to Ms. Gillen on another great event!

The Criminal Justice DT Training held at FMH BOCES in Johnstown, NY on 4/29 was instructed by Mr. Campos with assistance from Mr. Tom Greco & Ms. Arlene Brown of the Johnstown ZDK.  We have been invited to teach the HS CJ students for several years by Mr. John Pecora, their teacher.  We would like to thank him for the annual invitation and look forward to meeting the students next year.

ADDED 4/19/11:  FLORIDA SEMINAR:  Ms. Susan Jackson, Chief Instructor of the Traditional Martial Arts Training Center in Orlando, FL hosted Mr. Campos for a seminar on Sat. Apr. 9.  The group's level of enthusiasm and energy made the class fun.  Unfortunately, Mr. Campos had to leave immediately following the training to travel to Arlington, VA.  While in VA he had the opportunity to have dinner with longtime friend and ZDK senior rank Mr. Joel Kirch.  We hated to leave the Sunshine State!

PICTURE Ms. Susan Jackson's TMA group in Orlando.

NORTHERN NY ZDK CLUBS SEMINAR:  On April 15-17, Mr. Campos traveled to Malone, NY to present two seminars for the several ZDK System & affiliated clubs located there.  Sat. morning he presented a children's class followed by an adult class.  Both seminars were very well attended by the N-NY ZDK members.  It was great to see so many Course Instructor's in attendance including;  Mr. Bass, Mr. Brown, Mr. Guccione, Ms. Langdon, Ms. Malik, Mr. Perry, as well as a large number of black belts and kyu ranks from their clubs.  On Sat. evening the annual N-NY Awards banquet was held at the Malone Elks Lodge, a beautiful building in the center of town.  It is always great to get a chance to meet the N-NY members and have an opportunity to socialize with old and new friends.  It was also great to see two people who recently returned to training after long absences from the ZDK, Mr. Joe Seeber & Mr. Jerry Benware.  The annual weekend is organized by Ms. Cheri Langdon, along with her dad, Mr. Ron Brown.  As always, Mr. Campos truly appreciates the bi-annual invitation to teach and the decades-long support of the N-NY clubs.

ADDED 3/21/11:   CONGRATULATIONS TO JEFF STREUN on a successful Shodan test this past Sat. at the Johnstown ZDK.  We had a packed house of spectators, Uke's, and Board members.  Jeff had previously trained in Kenpo for 4 years before coming to the Johnstown ZDK ten years ago.  He has been a very dedicated and hard-working member of the dojo and has worked extremely hard for his rank.  Many thanks to everyone who came to assist, participate, and observe his test.

JEFF STREUN'S TEST BOARD, BLACK BELTS, & INSTRUCTORS (L-R):  FRONT KNEELING:  SENSEI CAMPOS, JEFF STREUN, SENSEI BOB STREETER;  STANDING L-R:  BONNIE STREETER, HARRY TOMLINSON, IAN SANTANGELO, KEITH STEVENSON, TOM GRECO, ARLENE BROWN, RICHARD SCHUYLER, JEFF MELANDER, BRIAN COX, TONY IRVIN, HEATH WATERMAN, JOHN PEZZINO, BOB PINNEY, RICK RINALDO

CONGRATULATIONS TO MR. BOB PINNEY on a successful 15th Annual Tournament at Colgate University on Sun.  Many senior ZDK black belts were on hand to participate as judges and competitors.  Highlights of the day included the excellent sparring match for Seniors Black Belt Champion between Ray Cornwell and Jeff Melander.  Mr. Melander, though smaller & lighter than his opponent demonstrated phenomenal speed, mobility, and technical ability to win the division.  An equally phenomenal match took place between Blaze Cox and John Pezzino for the Black Belt Championship.  The score at the end of the two rounds was just 4-3.  Their fight was truly a demonstration of speed, control, technique, extremely HIGH ENERGY and great sportsmanship.  There seems to be a very friendly but highly competitive rivalry between these two black belts but on this day the trophy went to Mr. Pezzino.  The audience was buzzing by the end of the match.  The great part was going home at 3 pm.

ADDED 3/15/11:   The EDS seminar held at Bailey's Karate in Herkimer, NY was attended by 25 enthusiastic participants which was perfect for the space available.  The focus of the class was on ground defense both unarmed and against weapons.  This was a great primer for anyone interested in developing skills on the ground and was great review for attendees who were familiar with Judo & BJJ.  Charlie Moore & Tom Arcuri instructed the full day of training and they made the day both fun and informative.  This class was a follow-up to the Nov. 2010 training which focused on stand-up skills.  Plans are to offer another session in the fall either at the same location or at a sponsor's location.

ADDED 3/4/11:   CONGRATULATIONS TO MR. & MRS. GUCCIONE on hosting their Wounded Warrior Project fundraiser on Sat. 2/26 at SUNY Canton in Canton, NY.  The event raised $283 for the WWP, as well as, food for the local food pantry.  Many thanks to the N-NY instructors and students who came to participate and donate.  The WWP has been in the national news (Today Show) and in the local (Albany, NY) news for their efforts on behalf of our wounded veterans.  The ZDK has already donated $2,583 for 2011 and everyone has until Veteran's Day to complete a fundraiser.  Thank you for your support!

ADDED 2/24/11:  ZDK TOP SCHOOLS AWARDS FINALIZED:  The following is a list of Top Schools for 2010.  We will either personally give the certificates to Course Instructors or mail them soon.  Congratulations to everyone receiving an award and thank you for your support of the ZDK and our programs.  BRONZE AWARD SCHOOLS:  #8 CAPITAL AREA MARTIAL ARTS – GAIL TOLLEY – ALBANY, NY #7 SHIN RI TAN KYU - KEVIN SUGGS - SLEEPY HOLLOW, NY;  #6 PROGRESSIVE MARTIAL ARTS – ROCCO ALIANIELLO – ALTOONA, PA #5 CANTON ZDK – DAVE & LISA GUCCIONE – CANTON, NY #4 WILLIAMS CORPORATION ZDK – RICK EIERDAM – HOUSTON, TX #3 BAILEY’S KARATE SCHOOL – TROY RODMAN – CORTLAND, NY #2 RED DRAGON KARATE SCHOOL – JEFF MELANDER – BALLSTON SPA, NY #1 FOREST SPIRIT MARTIAL ARTS – ANDREA MALIK – POTSDAM, NYSILVER AWARD SCHOOLS #5 KICKS & STICKS FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS – ERNIE LABERGE – SOUTHAMPTON, MA #4 KENSHO-DO KARATE – GLENN WARD – LOUDONVILLE, NY #3 WATERMAN’S MARTIAL ARTS – HEATH WATERMAN – ONEIDA, NY; #2 LONE STAR KARATE – TODD KELLY – RICHMOND, TX #1 CHERRY VALLEY & COBLESKILL ZDK – BRIAN COX & KEITH STEVENSON – CHERRY VALLEY & COBLESKILL, NYGOLD AWARD SCHOOLS:  #4 GREENE DRAGON MARTIAL ARTS – JOHN  PEZZINO – GREENE, NY #3 TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS – SUSAN JACKSON – ORLANDO, FL #2 AMERICAN ZEN-DO KAI – BOB & BONNIE STREETER – JOHNSTOWN, NY #1 BROOKS KARATE SCHOOL – LARRY & LAURA BROOKS – W. ADDED 2/24/11:  NEW ZEALAND NEWS FLASH We received a message last night from Johnny Kennedy indicating that he and his family were OK.  They have no power or water and are hoping that things will be back to normal in a reasonable period of time.

ADDED 2/23/11:  NEW ZEALAND NEWS:  We have had inquiries from members who were concerned about Johnny Kennedy in Christchurch, New Zealand.  We have tried contacting him to see if everyone is safe but have not heard anything yet.  This earthquake did much more damage to central Christchurch and the surrounding area than the quake several months ago.  Johnny's club & MA supply business were located in the Christchurch business district which has been heavily damaged.  When we were there a couple of years ago we visited the Cathedral that collapsed.  We also were part of a live TV show for children at the CTV building which has also collapsed.  All of the people we met from Johnny's organization and his family were wonderful and we hope and pray for their safety.  New Zealand is an absolutely beautiful country and we hope that they are able to rebuild their lives and communities quickly.

ADDED 2/7/11:  Congratulations to Mr. & Mrs. Brooks on a successful 18th annual tournament on Sun. 2/6/11 in W. Winfield, NY.  The turnout for the event was great and many of the usual cast and crew were on hand to help make the day run smoothly.  ZDK Assn. Instructors included:  Tom Arcuri, Dave Bruce, Brian Cox, Bruno Daniele, Vicki Gillen, Jeff Melander, Keith Stevenson, Bob & Bonnie Streeter, & Harry Tomlinson along with a large number of black belts from various clubs.  While it was cold outside, the competition inside was hot.  We took special note of the Senior Kata competition between Tom Arcuri & Bob StreeterMr. Streeter apparently had to scratch the competitive itch after being semi-retired for awhile and took home the 1st place in that hard fought division.  Mr. Arcuri went on to carry the Grand Championship trophy home in the overall Men's Sparring division.  Hopefully the younger generation of competitors learned some valuable lessons about focus, presentation, and strategy by watching both of their performances!

ADDED 1/31/11:  Congratulations to Mr. Peter Lopez on his reelection to the NYS Assembly.  His swearing-in ceremony took place recently in Schoharie county and was attended by over 200 constituents and friends.  Assemblyman Lopez has been a ZDK member since he was a teenager and received his training at the Cobleskill, NY ZDK.  We wish him continued success in his political career.  He has attributed a lot of his personal accomplishments to his martial arts training and we are proud to have played a small part in that success.

ADDED 1/24/11:  Congratulations to Mr. Jeff Melander, Chief Instructor at Red Dragon Karate School in Ballston Spa, NY on his very successful open house on Sat. 1/22.  In addition to celebrating a decade in the same location, Mr. Melander recently expanded his club to essentially double its size.  The space is really beautiful and professionally appointed.  Mr. Campos enjoyed seeing Tony & Shawn Irvin, as well as, the RDMA black belts, students, and parents.  Mr. Melander started with Mr. Irvin when he was about 8 years old and took over the operation of the school when he was just 16.  Anyone who has seen Mr. Melander perform recognizes his phenomenal talent as a martial artist and he is also a great instructor and role model for his students.  We are proud that he is a ZDK member and wish him continued success.  NOTE:  We were glad to hear that Jeff's wife Jane is doing well and has fully recovered her health.  2011 looks to be a great year for RDMA

ADDED 1/17/11:  Many thanks to the Instructors, Black Belts, & assistants who showed up on Sat. to help the Black Belt test candidates on the pre-test.  There were two candidates present:  Jeff Streun from the Johnstown ZDK & Taro Hudson from Pinney's American Karate in Hamilton/Sherburne, NY.  Board members and assistants included:  Brian Cox, Blaze Cox, Hunter Cox, & Mercedes Kassinger from Cherry Valley, NY ZDK; Bob Pinney from PAK;  John Pezzino from GDMA in Greene, NY;  Jeff Melander from RDMA in Ballston Spa, NY;  Bonnie & Bob Streeter, Tom Greco, Harry Tomlinson, Ian Santangelo, & Richard Schuyler from the Johnstown ZDK.  By the time we completed the pre-testing the snow was flying and we hope everyone had a safe trip home.  The pre-testing program is invaluable for anyone who plans to test at our bi-annual organizational tests in March & July.  The Course Instructors who choose to participate in that program help us to maintain a standard of excellence in terms of physical conditioning and technical proficiency that is second to none.  The board members & assistants sacrifice their time and provide feedback in order to help every candidate succeed.  Thank you.

ADDED 1/14/11:   The annual Choices Conference at Fulton-Montgomery Community College in Johnstown, NY was another success.  Originally scheduled for Wed. 1/12, it had to be re-scheduled the next day due to the big storm that closed all the schools in the area.  Choices is hosted by the Alcohol & Substance Abuse Council of Hamilton, Fulton, & Montgomery counties and brings together high school students from the three counties for a day of positive activities.  Since Choices began over 20 years ago Mr. Campos has been invited to present sessions on personal protection and self-defense.  The program has always been popular and requested by the students.  This year we instructed 4 sessions with the able assistance of Ms. Rhonda Holland, Mr. Tom Greco, Mr. Richard Schuyler. and Mr. Jeff Streun from the ZDK studio in Johnstown.  Their voluntary help and assistance was greatly appreciated.  The ZDK has done a multitude of community programs and events as a public service for over 40 years.

ADDED 1/3/11:   Congratulations to Roland Lavigne, a black belt member of Mr. Melander's Red Dragon club in Ballston Spa, NY on being briefly featured teaching martial arts in a clip on the Today Show recently.  The story was about the Friday Knight's volunteer program that he participates in:  http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/40827714#40827714  We want to thank Roland for making us aware of this story & his accomplishments.
